Napoleon Hat Sells for Nearly $2 Million in Paris

Napoleon’s hat auctioned for almost two million dollars in Paris. A French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s bicorne hat sold at a Paris auction house for a record 1.932 million euros. The hat, which was sold at Drott auction house, was initially expect to fetch between six and eight million euros. The black cap also features a blue, white and red medallion with the colors of the French flag. The hat was previously own by French businessman Jean-Louis Noziz, who died last year. The auction house in Fontainebleau, south of Paris, did not identify the buyer of the hat.

South Korean Businessman

Another Napoleon hat was last bought in 2014 by a South Korean businessman for 1,884,000 euros, breaking the previous record, an auction house official said. Auctioneer Jean-Pierre Ossant told Reuters the hat was a trademark for Napoleon, who owned 120 such hats in his lifetime.

“This hat is part of the image that they created for themselves,” Ossant told Reuters in an interview.
